ACT!

ACT%21

As the end of the school year rolls around the annual ACT comes around. The ACT(American College Testing) is a timed test that colleges and universities use for admissions and placements. During this testing, the junior students are given a short time to answer questions throughout the five sections: English, Mathematics, Reading, Science, and Writing – and are graded on a scale of one to thirty-six.

The first section given is the English section, the students receive just forty-five minutes to seventy-five questions. This section is filled with multiple-choice questions based on grammar, vocabulary, spelling, and small stories. With just thirty-six seconds per question, this section is actually viewed as the easiest.

Next in line is the math section, this section has the most time to complete with sixty minutes, and holds just sixty questions, one minute per question. This section is considered the most difficult with questions ranging from pre-algebra to trigonometry.

The next thirty-five minutes of testing is spent on the reading section. During this section, the students read a short passage and answer forty multiple-choice and short-answer questions. This section is very tricky due to the time-consuming reading and short time.

The last section that has multiple questions is the science section. This section deals with biology, chemistry, earth and space sciences, and physics. A majority of this section is detailed graphs and statistics adding up to the forty questions that the students need to be very time-sensitive about for their thirty-five minutes on this section.

The final section given is the writing, during this, the student is given a prompt and is required to write an essay in forty minutes.

Throughout the testing session, two breaks are given to the students. One is given after the math section and the next after the science section. These breaks are very vital to the student’s success during this test.

The ACT is provided during the junior year by the school, the results are spent in colleges that the students are interested in. Depending on the score some students can receive full-ride scholarships. Taking advantage of this opportunity is a great way to get free money. Study for your test and understand what to expect!

Ashlyn Hack
Ashlyn Hack, Staff Writer
Ashlyn is a student who came here from six different states until her family landed here in Alliance Nebraska. When she got here she was in 11th grade and now she is a senior in Alliance High School. She will be graduating in the year 2024. Her dreams after graduation are to go to Chadron State College and to become a school psychologist. The reason for her going to this college is because of how close to home it is plus it has a trio program and this trio program allows her to reach out to businesses and help her learn more about becoming a school psychologist. Her inspiration is her own mother, for these goals she is heading for in her further education. She wants to become a school psychologist because one, in her younger years, helped her through some hard times so she wants to pass down kindness and help others. The Upward Bound Club helped her be allowed to feel her fellow club members becoming family and then her car rides helped her relieve her stress of the day by listening to her favorite music at its loudest while going down country side roads and the brick/pavement of the roads in Alliance. One more thing is that she is a very animal loving person and has four dogs and one cat. Ashlyn's favorite type of food is a chocolate cashew because it's two of her favorite snacks in one. One of the many things that is unexpected in her new year as a senior is joining the Spud. She can’t wait to write fascinating stories for the SPUD this year. Since she was able to join the SPUD she has been able to spread her passion of writing and pursuing stories.
