The Veteran’s Day program was once again hosted at the PAC, on November 10, 2017. All of the high school as well as the seventh and eighth graders from the middle school attended. The program began with the posting of the colors which was done by the American Legion, following that, the AHS small brass ensemble performed the National Anthem. Mr. Eric Oestman later introduced all of the Veterans by honoring them by the eras in which they served. There was many different wars and different Veterans that fought in each that were present at the program. The last Veteran to stand was Mr. Howard Watson who fought in World War II,  receiving a standing ovation. Later, Dani Carter read the History of Veteran’s Day, informing the audience why we celebrate it and how it started.

Mr. Michael Baker then introduced the first speaker, Troy Sorenson, who talked about why it is important to know your purpose in life. He talked about his experiences after the war, and how he became depressed and suicidal. He then turned to atheism. He said he had all he could ever need, but in reality he was not happy. He was unfulfilled with life, and felt as if he did not belong. He later explained how he found Christ, and once again became happy with the life he had. He informed us on the number of Veterans that commit suicide everyday. He ended his speech telling the audience that we are worth it, we have a purpose, and that God loves us.

After the first speaker, the High School’s, Harmonics, choir performed “God Bless the USA” arranged by Don Mcafee.

The second speaker was a video interview of Mr. Howard Watson. He was asked about his experiences during war, and his thoughts about Veteran’s day. He discussed his time during World War II, and being a prisoner of war.

The program ended with a video clip named “Civil War: Honorable Manhood” by Mr. Ken Burns. The video presented a soldier reading a letter he wrote to his wife expressing all of his love to her and how she should not worry if he does pass.

As the students filed out of the PAC, the program left a lasting impression of just how important Veterans are and why it is important to thank them for all the sacrifices they have made.
