Homecoming Week, 2011, “Ransack the Raiders,” success! Monday’s theme was “funkadelic.” Many students sported tie-dye and peace signs throughout the hallways of AHS. Also, the first round of mini-olympics was held after school.
Tuesday was “hick day.” Most students wore overalls, cut-off shirts, boots, and, to top it off, students were allowed to wear cowboy hats for the price of one dollar, with the funds going toward Jayden Thacker’s family to cover medical expenses incurred during the removal of a brain tumor. After school, the yearbook signing party was held in the multi-purpose gym. However, students were disappointed the event did not cultivate more social appeal so many students just picked up their yearbooks and left.
On Wednesday the theme was fictional character day and everyone from the M&M guys to Minnie Mouse could be seen walking the halls. After school, the second round of mini-olympics continued inside, due to the wind.
Everyone wore pink on Thursday symbolizing that day’s theme, “Washout the Raiders.” After school, four teams competed in the final round of the mini-olympics. The winners were announced later that night at Coronation. “Urine Trouble” took the top spot and won t-shirts, bragging rights, and free entrance into the dance. Thursday night’s activities included Coronation where the cheerleaders performed their zombie dance and pumped up the students with cheers and chants. There was also a male cheerleading competition where Adrian Madero was named Mr. Cheerleader. Bridget Ackerman and Adrian Madero were named Queen and King. The only disappointment of the day was the burning of the “A” cancellation due to the wind.
Friday was the big day for the AHS football team and team spirit showed throughout the halls. The football boys wore their jerseys and their supporters wore their away jerseys. The hallways were a sea of blue and white. The boys won their game Friday night against Sidney 46 to 20. At halftime the Marching Band performed their marching competition show. The game was followed by the homecoming dance, which proved to be a final low point in the week of festivities. Many were disappointed with the DJ as she did not live up to the standards of past DJ’s from this company. There were many complaints and many students were also upset the lights remained on during the entire night of dancing.
Overall, there were many high spots and the AHS Student Council, Mrs. Shannon Garwood, and everyone who contributed to the week of celebration deserves kudos for a job well done. Make sure you check out the slide show for images of the good times we had during Homecoming Week, 2011.
