Bohemian Rhapsody: A True Legacy
Bohemian Rhapsody, whether you are talking about the major motion biopic or the world wide hit song, have had major success and have taken the entertainment industry by storm in their own unique ways.
The rock phenomena, Queen, first came out with “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 1975. It was written by the band’s lead singer, Freddie Mercury, for their 1975 album “A Night at the Opera.” It was a huge musical risk, using operatic style and controversial lyrics unheard by audiences ever before. When it was first released, the song became a commercial success and stayed at on top of UK’s singles chart for a whopping 9 weeks. It sold more than one million copies by the end of the next year. After Freddie Mercury’s death the song topped the charts, and after the biopic was released it topped the charts once again. “Bohemian Rhapsody” was so successful that even after all these years, it is still one of the most played songs and still considered one of the greatest rock songs of all time.
The success of the song inspired the title of the biopic, “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The movie stars Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, Ben Hardy as Roger Taylor, and many more incredible performers. According to Deadline it is now the highest-grossing music biopic of all time. To many, it is now a big surprise that this movie has broken so many records and made over $608.7 million worldwide, sailing over other movies such as “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again,” “The Greatest Showman,” and even “Straight Outta Compton.” IndieWire’s Anne Thompson stated shortly after the movie was released that “Bohemian Rhapsody is a straight-on biopic with plenty of Queen music and a strong performance by Rami Malek.”
Freddie Mercury’s short lived life was incredibly unique and exceeded the expectations of many who were less educated on the topic. He gave light to new styles of music and stage performances. Not only did he inspire so many new artists and sounds, he also helped to shed a bit of light and hope to those who were struggling with what he was at the time.
The biopic follows the amazing life that he lived and the hardships he went through including his struggle with his sexuality and HIV. The movie was nominated for 5 oscars in January, and was awarded 4 on February 24. These awards included the award of “best actor of the year” which was awarded to Rami Malek, the lead role of the movie. It was definitely Bohemian Rhapsody’s year at the 2019 Academy Awards and this just goes to show how much of an influence a band can still have after all these years.
In 2004 the song was inducted into the Grammys Hall of Fame. The song has been so successful to this day that in December of 2018 it became the most streamed song from the 20th century and the most popular classic rock song of all time. The number of downloads has exceeded 1.6 billion. According to The Beach Boys leader, Brian Wilson, in 1976, he stated that Bohemian Rhapsody is “the most competitive thing that’s come along in ages.” Freddie Mercury and his band mates created something would live on for hundreds of years to come. They truly created a legacy that all rock bands will follow in the future.
