On Saturday, March 2 the speech team had a contest at Mitchell. The speech team has been preparing for this all month. As a team, they were class A/B champions!
Emily McCune, a junior, was one of the competitors in the contest where she got second in extemporaneous speaking. She stated “I did very well. It was a hard contest so I knew I had to push myself!” Emily mentioned that she was happy with how well she did because she tried new tactics to draw in the judges. She stated, “Looking back I am glad with my accomplishments and am looking forward to districts.” With this being a tough competition Emily thinks that the team did a really good job. She said, “There were smaller schools outside of the school district so it was a different type of competition. Nevertheless, as a team, we stood very well against them!” Mitchell had some different competitors that AHS was being compared to. With it being a different type of competition that means a new set of judges and new challenges arising. However, they were smaller rounds which made it more valuable to stand out! Emily had no regrets about the meet. She stated, “I am going to make some changes based on the judges’ feedback for districts to prepare for success!”
Ayvrie Waldron, a junior, also was competing in the Mitchell meet. She won third with her OID (Oral Interpretation of Drama) group; Lucy Behrends, Ryleigh Mashburn, Ayla Foster, and Arianna Rodriguez. Ayvrie did very well at this meet. She said, “I think I did well! I haven’t been able to make it to many meet due to other commitments, but I am very proud of my placement!” Ayvrie is very proud of how well she did and how well her team did too! She said, “I am very proud of how well we did, both individually and as a team. Almost everyone medaled which is awesome! I am so happy that I have such a great team and that we support each other no matter what!” Ayvire thought that the Mitchell meet was one of the harder meets this year. She said, “I think it was a difficult meet. As we get closer to the end of the season the competition gets harder.” If Ayvrie could change one thing she said, “I would have had everyone on our team medal! However, judging is so subjective that you may medal one time and not another with the same level of performance just based on the judge and their preferences.”
Districts will be the next meet for the AHS speech team. Don’t forget to support them and wish them luck and hopefully, they will have some speakers going to state!
