Senior Night Tennis

For many sports, having a match or game at home can be one of the most exciting experiences for a team. The home court advantage is there, more fans come and no traveling is necessary. Unfortunately for the Alliance High School Tennis Teams, only one home match is allowed for the JV and Varsity teams. After not having a season last year, it is devastating for this year’s seniors to only have one home match. Varsity was supposed to have a triangular against Gering and Scottsbluff on Tuesday, April 6, but due to forecasted weather it was changed to Thursday, April 8.

This year’s tennis team consists of 13 girls, many of which are just starting their first season of tennis. Following the cancelation of last season, the only returning varsity player ended up graduating. This left the Lady Bulldogs with a completely clean slate for the varsity squad this year. Four of the six varsity players are in their first season of tennis, while the other two only have junior varsity experience.

After the high school courts began falling apart, the tennis team was relocated to the Central Park courts. These courts are not in much better condition, though. These courts are made of uneven cement, don’t have working lights, and have next to no seating for spectators. Thankfully, there is work being done to hopefully resurface the courts, add bleachers and get working lights soon.

Senior, Courtney Cox is enjoying her first year of playing tennis. Right now, she is the number three player on the team. She plays number one doubles in tournaments with Kelsey Horton. When asked how she felt about only having one home match, Cox responded, “It’s sad but I understand our courts aren’t the best, so I don’t mind traveling.”

Despite the challenges, the girls have done a great job overcoming all of the challenges that they have faced. They continue to work hard and represent Alliance with class and pride at their competitions. Best of luck to these ladies as their season gets into full swing!
