Along with all of the other fall sports, girls golf has teed off! The girls started their season on August 25 at the Sidney Tournament. This season has already seen huge improvement since last year, even with losing players.

This year’s girls golf team only consists of five players: Regan Lambert (SR), Julia Carlson (SR), Julia Wilson (JR), Morgan Young (JR) and Donna LeMunyan (JR).

I had the opportunity to talk with three year returning player, Julia Wilson. As a team, Julia would like to “keep improving and cutting strokes off our team score.” For a personal goal, she strives to shoot in the nineties.

I also was able to talk to head coach Mrs. Berlyn Clear. This year will be Clear’s second year as head coach for girls golf. Some goals she has for the team are “to break 400 as a team score, improve [the player’s] own personal records from last year and continue to improve their game and enjoy their time on the team.  I want them to build relationships as a team and also to learn how to set goals and achieve them.” As a coach, Clear also has some personal goals. “I want to continue to learn how to motivate athletes and be an encourager both on and off the course,” says Clear. “ I want to continue to help the girls improve their games to the best of their ability.”

The girls have been working hard in practice and it is paying off. A variety of girls have placed in the tournaments already. The Lady Bulldogs were the champions in the Mitchell golf invite on September 10. Julia Wilson placed fourth, and Morgan Young placed seventh. The girls also scored a team score of 390.

The AHS girls golf team is proof that hard work and determination pays off, even when the numbers aren’t necessarily on your side. The SPUD wishes the girls golf team good luck for the rest of the season!
