Nebraska takes fourth NCAA title

The Nebraska Huskers have captured their fourth NCAA volleyball title in school history. Claiming their first NCAA title since 2006, No. 4 seeded Nebraska defeated No. 3 seeded Texas in an incredible 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-23, 25-21) in Omaha on Saturday night. The game also gave Nebraska a total of 98 NCAA Tournament wins, which ranks second in the nation right behind Stanford. With the victory, the Big Ten has now won seven NCAA titles in the last nine years, as Penn State has won six of the last nine championships.

Earlier in the week, with the largest crowd in NCAA volleyball tournament history fueling them, the Cornhuskers defeated Kansas in four sets to move to the finals (25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 25-16).

The Final Four tournament consisted of Nebraska, Texas, Kansas and Minnesota. Number 9-seeded Kansas upset No. 1 seeded USC in a thrilling game, to join the other three teams in the final four. On Thursday, December 17, Texas and Minnesota played, while Kansas and Nebraska played. Nebraska and Texas advanced into the finals.

Due to the championship game, two seniors were absent for their college graduation. Alicia Ostrander and Cecilia Hall were both given their diplomas at the award ceremony at the Devaney Center on Sunday afternoon in front more than 1,000 fans welcomed back the Huskers about 18 hours after they swept Texas to claim the NCAA championship at the CenturyLink Center.
