Throughout the holiday season, it is displayed as a joyful time with family; however for some people that isn’t always how it is. Three of our FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) members came together for their chapter service project display to make the holidays special for the elderly at Highland Park.
During the months of October and September Taylee Thompson, Macey Seebohm, and Aubree Garcia participated in several fundraisers. These activities were three football field cleanups and running concession stands at a volleyball tournament. Collecting this money allowed these three girls to supply gifts to the residents at Highland Park. When asked about the gifts that were given Taylee Thompson said, “We bought them crayons, markers, and coloring books in September. We made them goodie bags with fuzzy socks, candy, and a painting set in October. In November we made coconut cream pies that were designed as turkeys. We used paper to make the feathers and beaks, and then used buttons for the eyes, with notes of gratitude on the back. Then in December, we bought them a bunch of presents! Two jackets, eight blankets, seven pairs of pajama pants, and four pairs of slippers were wrapped and placed under their tree.” With these gifts, the holidays were made special for some who have no family or friends to celebrate with.
When asked about why they chose to help Highland Park out of all places in town, Taylee said, “We chose Highland Park because I have a personal connection to up there. My grandma was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and lived there for 6 years. It is hard for the resident’s families to get up there every day especially since most don’t remember them. So, we decided we wanted to be there for them.” Finding ways to participate in our community is important to not only the town but the residents as well!
