Paleo, atkins, keto, and south beach are just some of the many diets that have taken the health world by storm. Some of these contradict each other, while others are very similar. The before listed diets have been more favorable at different times. In present day, the keto diet is trending, but in the 80s, low-fat diets were more common. These two diets actually contradict each other completely; so what diet is truly the most healthy and helpful?

The Paleo Diet

The paleo diet is actually mimicking the way of eating during the Paleolithic era, hence the name. The Paleolithic era dates back to millions of years ago, so why is the diet so common? The foods eaten on the paleo diet include foods that would have been hunted and gathered, such as meats, fish, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. These foods are not as processed. Some foods that are avoided on the paleo diet are dairy products, legumes, refined sugar, and potatoes.

Atkins and Ketogenic

Within the Atkins and ketogenic diet, people avoid eating sugar and carbohydrates. These diets focus on protein and high fat meals. Fat is burned for energy instead of carbohydrates, resulting in weight loss. People have noted that they have less cravings and don’t feel as hungry on both diets as well. Those who choose this diet can still eat carbs, but their intake is limited.

South Beach

The South Beach diet is a bit more complex than other diets. It focuses on less carbohydrates and higher protein and fat, but the intake of carbohydrates is not strict. The carbohydrates that are avoided on this diet contain the ones that are implied as bad, such as candy and junk food. However, as people get more used to the diet, they can add bread and pasta back to their meals. Calories are counted on this diet, and exercise is encouraged. According to the Mayo Clinic, people can eat “lean protein, such as seafood, skinless poultry, lean beef and soy products.” Vegetables, nuts, and seeds are also encouraged in this diet.

Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is becoming more and more popular. This diet does not focus on what food in particular is important, but instead when people should eat the food. The most popular method is fasting for 16 hours and creating an eight hour eating gap. People have noted that they actually have more energy with their fasting.

One thing that is found in many diets is limitation of carbohydrates. This might not work for some people, while for others it is the main solution. Of course, diets affect people in many different ways. If someone is interested in losing weight or maybe just trying to eat healthier, then they can try and see what diet works best for them.
