March 2 is Theodor Seuss Geisel’s birthday and is also known as National Dr. Suess Day. He was born ​​in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. ​​Theodor Suess Geisel is known by the famous name “Dr. Suess”. Of which was actually his middle name. Seuss decided to add ‘Dr.’ to his name as consolation to his father. Dr. Suess lived until he was 87 years old. He, unfortunately, passed away in 1991 at his home located in La Jolla, California due to cancer.
Suess has impacted many children over the world with his famous stories and illustrations. He wrote 48 books that have sold well over 200 million copies. Some books were even translated into multiple languages.
Dr. Suess’s first story, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street”, was published in 1937. His most famous works include “Green Eggs and Ham”, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “The Cat in the Hat.” Greens Eggs and Ham was first published on August 12, 1960, and had over 8 million copies sold by the year 2019! Green Eggs and Ham was about a man named Sam-I-Am who offers an unnamed man a plate of green eggs and ham. However, the man refuses multiple times throughout the story by saying, “I do not like green eggs and ham. I do not like them, Sam-I-Am.”
During the second war, Seuss drew over 400 cartoons for the PM newspaper based in New York. He also wrote films for the U.S. Air Force. He drew the cartoons from 1941 to 1943. After the war, he published the most children books in his career.
Dr. Seuss will forever be known for his beautiful illustrations and well-written stories. His books are still being sold to this day. There have been over 700 million copies of his books that were sold to adults and children from all over the globe since he first published his books.
