Summer means warm weather, sunny afternoons, long vacations, and, most importantly, no school. It also means one of the most exciting sports seasons filled with excitement and anticipation. With that in mind, I have developed the top-5 sporting events to watch for this summer.
What to watch for:
5. College World Series – June 2013
Held annually at Omaha’s TD Ameritrade Park, the College World Series never lacks excitement. Eight teams are split into two, four-team, double-elimination brackets, with the winner of each bracket playing in the best-of-three championship series. The tournament takes place for the duration of June.
4. Stanley Cup – Late May – Mid-June, 2013
In what will be the 98th year of the Stanley Cup Final, Hockey’s premiere championship annually features the two best teams in the NHL. The action begins in late-May and will finish in early-June.
3. Wimbeldon – June 24 – July 7, 2013
The historical Wimbeldon Championships begin on June 25, in London, England. The top-3 players in the world, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokavic, among others will all be competing for the coveted Rosewater Dish.
2. U.S. Open Golf – June 13 – 16, 2013
By no means does the U.S. Open compare to the significance and tradition of The Masters Championship, but the excitement and demanding environment that the U.S. Open brings year after year is beyond bearable. The 2013 U.S. Open will be played at Merion Golf Club in Havorford, Pennsylvania, and will feature the top player in the world and the tournament favorite – Tiger Woods.
1. NBA Finals – Mid – Late June
As the NBA Finals are set to begin, many storylines surround this year’s event. Will the Heat repeat? Can the Spurs defy the law of youth? Can the Pacers or the Grizzlies upset? These possible scenarios make the NBA Finals as one the premiere sporting events of the year. The winning team will receive the Larry O’Brien Trophy.
