Traveling For Christmas This Year
The year of 2020 has come with many changes. This year, getting together with your family for the holidays is a difficult task. Due to Covid-19, many people are not traveling to see the family members that they would normally get to see. This has had some detrimental effects on many people’s mental health. It is very hard being stuck inside for long periods of time, and not getting that break to be able to spend time with family adds to that struggle. Many students that go to the high school also agree this year is going to be very different.
Based on a recent poll, over half of those who go to the high school are staying home and celebrating Christmas with their household family this year. Not many liked the idea of having to zoom family members over the holidays, but some were up for the task. One student explains, “It’s going to be weird not being able to give hugs and do the things we normally do. We also have to zoom my brother for the holidays, so that is going to be kind of weird.” Many states are encouraging civilians to stay home and to contact family members electronically. Those who are traveling are concerned about contracting Covid-19. Students at AHS are scared about getting out of their cars to make pitstops on the way to their destination. One student announced, “My only concern is when I get out of my car, or go to some place where people may not be wearing masks. It scares me that you could possibly contact it by being around one or two strangers for a short period of time. If it were my choice, I would not be traveling, but since my household family is all clear, we will be making the trip.” Though many are not traveling, if they do, it is not too far from home.
Many students that are going out of state for Christmas have said that all of their family members have already been tested, and will be tested again when they get back to town. Students are proud to say that they will be using masks when out of town, and will be continuing to follow Covid-19 precautions. The SPUD wishes everyone a happy and safe holiday season!
