The Lack of Electives
Classes have been overloaded with students, due to the lack of electives. Electives are very important to high schoolers. These classes are a great way to learn new things about yourself. Electives can give you an idea of what you want to do when you are older, and what you want to go to college for.
There was only one class dropped from last year, which was EA sports, however, Woods I-IV are not offered this year because a new teacher could not be hired. Also, Anatomy and Physiology are electives that had to cancelled, due to the lack of science teachers.
The lack of electives this year increased the number of students in each class. Usually they try to keep each class from eighteen to twenty-three students. This year, however, some classes have reached up to twenty-seven, which means there should be more classes available. With a lot of teachers leaving AHS last year, vice principal, Mr. Eric Oestman, states that they hope to hire teachers to fill the positions of the electives that are not offered anymore. He also states that there will be improvements in the amount of electives, and that there will be a meeting with staff discussing which electives will be offered next year.
Mr. Oestman says it is important to offer a variety of electives for students, because every student is different, and they all have different interests. He also says “it is important for students to step out of their comfort zone, because they can find new things they thought they wouldn’t enjoy, but end up loving.”
The scheduling process was fairly easy this year, even though there were some classes which weren’t offered. According to Mr. Oestman, most could find something they were willing to take and learn!
So, students should not be worried about the amount of electives offered this year. There are things being done to improve the options students will have for next year and next semester. Still, there are many options for students to choose from and they should try something different if they do not get what they first wanted!

I personally was really looking forward to taking every science elective I could, but with Physics being during 4th period and the rest I could have taken being cancelled I was left with none and no science class this year which was real bumming.
