The Academic Decathlon consists of ten events that test student’s knowledge in a chosen general topic. This year the general topic was India. Seven events were contested at the regional level: Language and Literature, Art, Music, Economics, Mathematics, Social Science, and Science.

Students compete in three divisions, Honors, Scholastic, and Varsity. Each school fields a team consisting of two students in each division and two alternates in each division. Schools are divided into classes based on enrollment. Alliance High School competes with other medium-sized schools.

On January 16, Hyannis hosted one of the regional competitions. Results for Alliance include Jennifer Campos and Emily Green in the Honors Division, Louis Sanchez and Vada Burri in the Scholastic Division, Dylan Kuzmic and Kathleen Trussel in the Varsity level. Honors Division Alternates include Elora Bleisch, and Rhegan Fritzler. Scholastic Division Alternate was Katie Failor. Jennifer Campos was the top scorer for AHS, scoring 2640 points.

Chemistry and Physics teacher, Ms. Laura Schroer, is in charge of the Alliance High School academic decathlon team. When asked about how the team prepares for competition, Ms. Schroer said, “My job was to find students to fit the various levels of competition. So I check GPA, class standing, and things like that.” She said, “We had four medalists in Science, and four in economics. Those were probably our two strongest subject areas.” When asked if anyone qualified for state this year, she said, “No. It’s been a while since Alliance qualified a team for state. I think it’s been about eight years, but no, we didn’t qualify for state.”
