The AHS Dynamic Duo

IMG_5922The most famous duo walking the Alliance High School halls is senior Tyler Wilson, and his interpreter, Mrs. Miller. Mrs. Miller has been with Tyler for 14 years. She was approached to work with Tyler when the Nebraska School for the Deaf announced it would be closing, the SPED director asked for people who would like to learn sign language. She was one of the two people who took the opportunity. Shortly after that, the interpreter who worked at Kiddy Kampus with Tyler left and Mrs. Miller was sent in. Basically, Mrs. Miller goes to Tyler’s classes and activities with him and signs for him. Tyler has been working on his cochlear implant to help him hear. He plans to wear it more often so he can become more independent in the future. The big question is: what lies in Tyler and Mrs. Miller’s future?

After high school, Tyler plans on attending the University of Nebraska Lincoln for general education. He then is going to transfer to Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) to seek a degree in Photography and Business Administration. When he leaves Alliance, he will miss all of the friends that he has made over the years. Of all the years of going to school at Alliance Public Schools, Tyler’s favorite memory was going to state competition for One Act his freshman year. The things he will miss most about Mrs. Miller is her always teasing Tyler and all of the faces that she makes at him.

After Tyler graduates, Mrs. Miller is planning to retire. “After 14 years with one student and one class, I don’t want to start over, they ruined me for others.” Although there have been many favorite memories, Mrs. Miller’s favorite is a teacher reading a book to the class, which she interpreted. The class later had to take an AR class and Tyler nailed it. “Many times I have doubted my ability to get the content of the class across correctly, but he seems to grasp it and do well, so he constantly gives me the boost that I need.” The thing that she will miss most about Tyler is his laugh. “There were countless times through the years that he has dissolved in fits of laughter over something I signed and most times I had no clue what it was, but it tickles me when he laughs about it.” Sooner or later, neither of them will be walking the halls of AHS. About not being in the school, Mrs. Miller says, “I will miss the group of seniors. I have been with them most of their school careers and being able to watch them grow up, mature, and become the young adults they are has been a wonderful privilege.”

This dynamic duo will be greatly missed in the high school next years and all of the years to come. From Mrs. Miller cracking jokes and making the whole class laugh, to her always being up on the stage with a speaker and only communicating to one student, but appealing to the rest. From Tyler always being a best friend and someone who will stick up for any student, to the loving and caring kid who never fails to make people laugh, the duo will be missed greatly.
