Both the Bulldog girl’s and boy’s basketball teams faced the Sidney Red Raiders Thursday, December 13 and both teams fell short. The girls lost in a heart breaker 31-32 and the boys lost 36-45. On Friday, December 14, both teams suited up again to take on Rapid City, South Dakota’s St.Thomas More High School. The girls lost 34-58 and the boys lost 35-66.
This year has been a tough one for the girl’s basketball team. Head Coach Nate Lanik said he cannot even predict where the team would be without the nay injuries that they have had. “Who knows were we would be without all the injuries, as a team we have been playing hurt all year long. It would be nice to play full strength, but you have to play with what you have and make the best with every situation.”
The list of injured reserved players on the girls’ team is extensive: Senior Shae Brennan tore her ACL, but the doctor said her knee is stable enough to play on as long as she wears a brace; junior Gabby Conley’s knee has also been bothering her and according to her doctor, her knee is inflamed and will need time to heal, perhaps six weeks; junior Sofi Fox is out with a concussion; sophomore Kenzie Brennan walked into basketball season with a torn ACL and a torn MCL; and finally, sophomore Ali Iossi cannot play until after Christmas break due to a fractured vertebrae.
Kenzie Brennan said, “I hate watching the girls play in pain, I just wish the whole team could be healthy.” She also wishes that she could be out on the court helping her team out.
As for the boys’ team, Head Coach Michael Baker said of their recent losses, “We didn’t have a very good weekend last weekend, but we have been practicing very well this past week and we’re ready for the Holiday Tourney.”
Both teams will suit up again to play in the annual Holiday Tournament held in the AHS gym on December 27.
