Legendary college football head coach, Congressman, teacher, mentor and Huskers Athletic Director Dr. Tom Osborne, 75, has retired from his duties as the Athletic Director at the University of Nebraska effective January 1, 2013.
Osborne told the media in the press conference announcing his retirement that he will still support the Huskers especially since the University is in process of adding on to Memorial Stadium and building a brand new state-of-the-art basketball arena.
The impact Osborne bestowed had on college football was just incredible. He taught character, integrity, honor, and compassion and he serves as a role model for coaches and athletes today. This is Osborneās second retirement from the Huskers. Genuine Husker fans remember the day Coach Osborne retired as the head coach of the Huskers in 1997 after winning a National Championship for the third time in four years. In his coaching career, Osborne had an incredible 255-49 win/loss record in 25 years as head coach for the Huskers. He also led the team to three national championships (1994, 1995 and 1997) and 13 conference titles.
Dr. Osborne also did many works of charity. In 1991, Dr. Tom and his wife, Nancy, founded the TeamMates program, which provides support and encouragement to school-aged youth with the goal of seeing children graduate from high school and pursue a post-secondary education.
Dr. Osborne will incredibly missed at UNL and by every Husker fan, but he has done more than enough for this University who commends him so much. Thanks Tom, for everything you have done and thanks for your unyielding service and all the roads you have helped pave for so many people. Thanks for many great memories, wins, the dedication to a purpose greater than yourself and your contributions to the Big Red.
