On the morning of Tuesday, January 26, 2016, an active shooter at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego was reported. It is being treated as an active shooter situation. This caused security personnel to urge people to stay away, and people in the building have been advised to “run, hide, or fight.” Law enforcements took up positions and began to direct cars and pedestrians away from the building.

A witness at the center reported hearing three gunshots in the basement of a combination gym and barracks building at about 8 a.m. PST. In videos captured by CNN affiliate KUSI, people seemed to be walking calmly from the building.

A restaurant owner nearby decided to keep his doors locked, despite his planned 10 a.m. opening as a safety precaution. A middle school and two high schools in the area were also locked down for safety.

The Naval Medical Center serves as a center for wounded active-duty personnel and their families. It offers an array of medical services for the families, including births. There are child-care facilities inside the center, but as stated on the center’s Facebook page, all children are “currently secured” and “all children are accounted for and safe. The entire complex is secure.”
