In today’s society, the use of cell phones is more than ever. From a young age, children can see that technology is everywhere and it begins to feel like a necessity. There are almost as many cell phone subscriptions- 6.8 billion- as there are people on the earth- 7 billion. The average age to be comfortable with a mobile device is ages 6-9.

It’s not uncommon for parents to offer their young children cell phones. Society is marketing mobile devices to younger children. Children learn by example and the example nowadays are that cell phones are the things that are holding everyone together. If someone a child knows has a cell phone, they would expect to have one as well. But is giving younger children mobile devices a good idea? The mature age to give a child their first cell phone is 13 or 14. At these ages, the owner is going to be more responsible and trustworthy than someone that is 6 or 7.

With such an age gap in those using mobile devices, there are less face-to-face interactions. It is much easier to send pictures and text messages than to actually talk to and show things to one another in person. Particularly, a young adult depend on their smartphones for internet access.

No matter what age you are, you depend more on your cell phone than anything. At work, at school, and sometimes at home, there are rules against the use of your cell phone. Phantom Phone Vibration is the feeling of when your phone is vibrating, but actually isn’t. There is a large amount of people who deem that their phone is vibrating and have the need to check it. Many people sleep with their phones beside their bed just so they do not miss any calls, messages, or other updates, as well as alarms.

It’s common for someone to feel like they need to have a cell phone, but do they really? Mobile devices are a want, not a need. The dependence of cell phones in today’s society is extremely high. When did it become normal to depend on a piece of technology?
