The Oscars were held in Hollywood, California, on Sunday, February 22nd. There were a lot of great awards given out like the best picture award which went to the movie “Birdman”. The best actor in a leading role was awarded to Eddie Redmayne who plays in “The Theory of Everything” and “Jupiter Ascending” and the best actor in a supporting role went to J.K Simmons. Julianne Moore who played in “Still Alice” won best actress in a leading role. The best actress in a supporting role went to Patricia Arquette in “Boyhood”. There were many other awards also given out.

Lady Gaga took the stage at the Oscars, surprising everyone when she started singing a tribute to Julie Andrews and The Sound of Music, as it was the movie’s 50th anniversary. Her performance caused a standing ovation and according to twitter it generated the highest number of tweets per minute of any other show. John Legend and Common also performed with a plain-clothes choir a song called “Glory” from the movie “Selma”. They performed in front of a backdrop of Alabama’s Edmund Pettus Bridge where hundreds of African Americans walked across in 1965 for the right to vote. The whole crowd was standing and some had tears running down their face. Shortly after their performance they won an award for the song.

Many were surprised that “American Sniper” didn’t take the ‘best picture’ award at the Oscars this year. Some think that it was because of the fake baby that was used in the movie. Birdman took the award for best picture.

After she won the award for Documentary Short Subject, Dana Perry gave a speech about suicide, she talked about how she lost her son when he was only 15, and since that happened she thinks that everyone needs to know about it and how we should start talking about it out loud.

The Oscars were certainly one to remember this year, and the lasting effect the speeches had will impact people for years.
