The Amazing Spider-Man 2 – May 2 (Trailer)

Let it be known that Spider-Man is my personal favorite fictional character ever. I grew up on the cartoons and toys (some of which I still own), and I’ve become very familiar with the world of Spider-Man comics. As a kid, I loved the original Spider-Man trilogy by director Sam Raimi (except for the third movie, we don’t talk about that one), and I still revisit those films from time to time.

Now we have a new world of Spider-Man on the big screen. We have Andrew Garfield as the title character, and Emma Stone as his love interest, Gwen Stacey. This new world focuses more on the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Peter Parker’s parents, as well as the company that is the origin of all evil, Oscorp.

I rather enjoyed the reboot a couple of years ago. While it had a number of problems, it was a decent attempt at retelling a classic origin tale while also being distinct in it’s own way. The visuals were amazing and the actors were all on top of their game.

The sequel, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, promises to finish the untold story of Parker’s parents, and introduce new villains Electro (Jaime Foxx), Rhino (Paul Giamatti), and The Green Goblin (Dane DeHaan).

While the action sure looks fun and the visuals are perhaps the best in a Spider-Man film yet, I believe the movie is just a bit over bloated for its own good. There seems to be far too many storylines and while I do trust director Marc Webb, he may just be a little too in over his head. I do expect, however, the acting to be great once again, as the cast swells with talent.

All being said, however, there is one gigantic problem with this new Spider-Man set of films. Sony, the company responsible for the movies, has done an absolute horrendous job at marketing this movie. The first movie was essentially given completely away in trailers and clips alone, ruining the experience. Early reviews of the movie say that Sony dropped the ball again this go around. If you have seen more than one trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, I can guarantee you a majority of this movie has already been spoiled for you. It’s embarrassing and sad that such a beloved character is having his story ruined even before he ever has a chance to swing across the screen.

Godzilla – May 16 (Trailer)

Perhaps the most famed movie creature film has ever known, Godzilla returns to the big screen in a fresh retelling of the classic story. From director Gareth Edwards, Godzilla looks to be more than just a CGI funfest. The look and feel of the movie ooze greatness and the cast is simply impressive. The star-studded cast includes Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Sally Hawkins, Ken Watanabe, and Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston. Sure to be an amazing spectacle, Godzilla will unleash in theaters and is sure to provide some amazing fun.

X-Men: Days of Future Past – May 23 (Trailer)

How awesome it that title?

X-Men: Days of Future Past brings together the two X-Men timelines together in what will be one of the biggest superhero feats in movie history. The potential is just as strong as the mutant superheroes we’ll see on screen. The return of director of Bryan Singer, who is responsible for the first two X-Men films, is nothing short of a godsend. The cast is too ridiculously good to begin to mention, with stars left and right. The story seems mind-bendingly good and the action just looks delicious. X-Men: Days of Future Past is a movie you don’t want to miss, I mean, why wouldn’t you want to see all these great actors punch each other for two hours?

Maleficent – May 30 (Trailer)

We all know the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty. Now, Maleficent brings us the untold story of the villain behind the famous story.

I’m a sucker for any movie that tells a story from a villain’s perspective, and Maleficent looks to be nothing short of satisfying. With amazing visuals and the great acting chops of star Angelina Jolie as our title character, this movie looks to something special.

If this movie can win at the box office and with fans, I would expect a flurry of movies to start following this lead – telling a story from the bad side.

A Million Ways to Die in the West – May 30 (Trailer)

Director Seth MacFarlane, responsible for the big hit Ted a couple of years ago, brings us his second directed film. A Million Ways to Die in the West is sure to be nothing but pure fun – fun that could only be delivered by someone like Seth MacFarlane. The jokes seem genuinely funny and never hold back on the raunchiness.

The cast is very well rounded as Seth MacFarlane, who is essentially making his live action acting debut, is joined by the likes of Amanda Seyfried, Charlize Theron, Neil Patrick Harris, Sarah Silverman, and the one and only Liam Neeson.

I love anything in the genre of Western, even if it is more of a spoof like it is with this movie, but simply said, this looks like a heck of a lot of fun.

Also This Month

With all the megahits hitting theaters this month, some other films may fly under the radar, and so I would like to recommend some other films also making their release this May.

Be sure to check out Neighbors, staring funny man Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, as well as Chef, a smaller movie from director Jon Favreau, whom you may know from “Elf” and the first two “Iron Man” films. Also make sure to look up “God’s Pocket”, a deep and dark comedy that features the late Phillip Seymour Hoffman, and “The Immigrant” that features the amazing talents of Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Renner, and Joaquin Phoenix.
