At the 86th Academy Awards there are many Oscars handed out to many known actors, actresses, and even the crew. When I was watching the Oscars on the night of March 2, the award that I enjoyed watching the most was the Best Supporting Actress Award.

The Best Supporting Actress Award has gone to many amazing actresses over the years. This years Oscar went to Lupita Nyong’o for the movie 12 Years A Slave. Not many people had heard of Lupita before the movie, but her acceptance speech reminded people that there is a long history behind how she was awarded that Oscar.

In addition to thanking the usual people, her family, crew, fellow cast, she thanked the director for bringing an emotional history for someone to the screens to share the story of Solomon Northup, the slave they portrayed in the memoir. Northup was a free man sold into slavery in Louisiana. “Everyone deserves not just to survive but to live, this is the most important legacy of Solomon Northup,” said British director Steve McQueen in his acceptance speech.

Lupita Nyong’o was born in Mexico to Kenyan parents. She was raised in Kenya and educated in the U.S., and is a graduate of Yale University School of Drama’s Acting program. Lupita’s role in the flim 12 Years A Slave, was a slave girl named Patsey. Lupita has appeared in many movies including The Winter’s Tale, Uncle Vanya, The Taming of the Shrew, and, Elijah.

12 Years A Slave won the Academy Award for Best Picture, making it the first movie from a black director to win the film industry’s highest honor in the 86 years of the Oscars. This film also included Chiwetel Ejrofor, Michael K. Willams, and Michael Fassbender.

Lupita Nyong’o’s performance in 12 Years A Slave was certainly one to remember. Her stunning role in the film has enthralled audiences worldwide, and I highly recommended watching her in the best picture, 12 Years A Slave.
