I had great apprehensions before going to see “War Horse.” I have seen far too many mushy horse movies to get giddy before seeing a movie like this. I was, however, proven wrong. The first thirty minutes of the movie were the painful cliché of every other horse movie and then just when my temperature was about to reach boil, something happened. Though on its surface the movie is about the horse, it takes on a much greater scope. Spielberg manages to make the story about the horrors of war through the horse that appeals to the inner human of people on both sides of the fight. The film is almost too big for itself containing many central characters, but “War Horse” rests safe in the experienced hands of Spielberg. Go see it. You will cry, and not because of the horse. “War Horse” will touch you with its earnest appeal for peace and have you thinking about the phrase repeated several times in the film. “War takes everything from everyone.”
