Katie Ackerman is one of our science teachers here at Alliance High School. Ackerman teaches Biology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Algebra 2. She said her favorite out of what she teaches is Biology. When I asked her why it is her favorite, she said, “I like that there are a lot of different things in biology, such as cellular biology and genetics. You also have ecology and population biology, so there are a lot of different things in biology.”
Mrs. Ackerman loves her students succeeding, from MAPS scores to just small things in general. When I asked why she wanted her students to succeed this is what she answered, “I want my kids to have the best shot at life and to be prepared for whatever they may encounter. For me, I want my students to be able to use logic and critical thinking as they go forward in life.” Being very successful in her schooling, I asked Ackerman how she did it. It was a simple answer, time and effort. If you put in the work, you will be happy with the outcome.
Before teaching at AHS, Ackerman taught at Alliance Middle School. She became a teacher because, “I like working with kids, I like helping people and I have always found just science in general interesting…” When I asked Mrs. Ackerman, if any one inspired her in life, she struggled a lot on this question. Her final answer was, “I was inspired by all the teachers before me, who pour their heart and soul into their work and make kids better for it.” When I asked her what was one piece of advice she would give to all her students, Mrs. Ackerman said “Sort out your priorities, and make sure school is high up on the list. Every bit of work you put into school now will help you at some point in time. Believe it or not, the things we make you do now are practice for what you have waiting for you as an adult!”
Mrs. Ackerman is excited to watch her students grow in knowledge this year. She is hoping for a good rest of the school year and can’t wait to learn more about her classes.
