The Timeless Nokia
The Timeless Nokia
The Nokia 3310 was introduced to the world on September 1, 2000. This mostly plastic phone sold over 126 million units. It looks like all the other phones of the past era, a rectangle with small buttons and a tiny screen. It has a unique design feature, though, a wrap-around ring of plastic that fits under the screen. The creator stated that he wanted the phone to have a friendly look, so it “smiles” at you; however, it gets notoriety for being near indestructible. Apparently, a Nokia resisted a bullet, but that is unconfirmed. They can operate under 10 feet of water, and survive falls up to 6 feet. It has infamously been used as a brick in house building, and it still functions.
Why don’t phones hold up today? Smartphones are made to be thin and light, the Nokia is an absolute unit. My theory is that it can withstand hits due to surface area, but who knows.
Today, Nokia as a company is still going strong. They’ve entered the smartphone age long ago. The smile wrap is gone.
Of course, they need more screen room. However, they still make flip phones and slide phones. Nokia is supposedly bringing the 3310 back. On to the modern side, the Nokia 6 has four cameras. People make such a big deal about Apple that we don’t notice the other phones lying around our feet. Now, if you thought four was ridiculous, try five. Yes, the Nokia 9 has five cameras. There cameras are situated in the middle of the back of the phone. Imagine being a simple factory trying to make a case for that? That is about a fourth of the phone being camera space. These cameras “capture as much light and detail as possible and over twelve times the depth of dual camera phones.” They can also capture raw photos for manual editing. At what point is photoshop built into the phone?
Now, the question we’ve all been waiting for. Are the current Nokia’s as durable as their legendary ancestors?
No. Upgrading to touchscreens meant losing what made Nokia famous, their shell. The housing that contained all the delicates has been lost, it is now just like every other modern phone. An era where phones were actually made to last has been lost to time.
