Political elections aren’t something a lot of high schoolers focus on between sports and classes; However, it should be important. These people are our future and we should care what is happening in our country. We should want to be informed and involved as much as possible.

On Tuesday, November 6, 2018 the general election will be held. This election takes place in the middle of Republican President Donald Trump’s first term. 435 seats in the United States House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the United States Senate will be contested. The House of Representatives have the responsibility for lawmaking with the U.S Senate. They make and pass federal laws.

The Senate and The House of Representatives are not the same thing. Every state is represented by two Senators but by different numbers of Representatives based on their population. The Senate represents the states and The House represents the people directly.

The purpose of having two houses in Congress is because the Founders thought that different types of people would be elected to these two bodies. The Senate is called the upper chamber and The House is called the lower chamber.

Everybody should be paying attention to the upcoming elections. These are the candidates who will be helping make decisions for you and your life, so you should want them to be the best fit for your state.
