Freshman Fear

Freshman+Fear

We have all had a first day of freshman year in high school, whether it was good or bad, it was usually a little scary. People often yell at the freshman because they don’t know what side of the hall to walk on, or they are made fun of since they tend to get lost.

High school isn’t like what you see in the movies. We don’t break out in song every five minutes like in the movie “High-school Musical”, thankfully. Students also have to focus on their classes more in the real world instead of floating through school.

We all know how the upperclassmen feel about the freshman, however, do we know what thoughts go through the freshmen’s heads before the first day of school? According to Sydney Allard and Lexi James, their only fears were getting lost in the halls. However, Amauri Browning had a different fear. She was scared that she wasn’t going to fit in and that her volleyball team wasn’t going to work well together. She later decided that her teammates were a really hard working group of girls. We have all been there and know how it feels.

Sydney, Lexi, and Amauri are all in different sports. Sydney, who participates in golf, says “I felt excited about starting my first year of golf! It’s a sport that not very many students do and I thought I would try something different.” When I asked her if being a part of a sports team helped her integrate into high school, she replied that “being a part of a sports team helps because there are other girls who are in the same boat as me, or who have been through their freshman year to help me out. It’s an individual sport but we work together to achieve our goals as a team.”

Lexi James is a cheerleader. She says, “I was pretty nervous, but definitely excited! I think that being a part of a sports team definitely helps in so many ways.” Volleyball also has a lot of freshman on the team this year. Amauri, who is a freshman playing on the JV team, says “Going into volleyball this year I was nervous about the upperclassmen and that I wasn’t going to feel a part of the team, but as we started to get into things, I realized that there was nothing to worry about as we all clicked and got along well.” She also says that “Being a part of a sports team really helps because it is a way to bond with other students that go to my school, and discover how well we all work together.”

When it comes to high school all experiences are different. There is no way to know how your high school career will end, but my advice to the freshman; don’t try to fit in by doing something out of character, just be you!
