There is a relatively new television series on Syfy which goes by the name of “Being Human” and is worthy of praise. “Being Human” is a science fiction drama that has recently premiered for it’s third season on Syfy. This new American series is based on the popular BBC United Kingdom version of “Being Human” this new American version, however, has a new vibe entirely.
The story follows the lives of a ghost, Sally Malik, played by Meaghan Rath, a vampire, Aiden Waite, played by Sam Witwer, and a werewolf, Josh Levison, played by Sam Huntington, and their attempts to at least act human. This proves to be harder than it sounds with several obstacles set in place to stop them.
For Aiden the obstacle takes the form of another vampire, named Bishop, who is the leader of the vampire population in Boston and goes to great lengths to make Aiden forsake his newfound virtues and come back to the family. In the first season finale the “Bishop problem” is finally a problem no more, but a new challenge in the form of the vampire queen that they call “Mother.” In the season two finale she prevails and has Aiden buried alive for an unspecified amount of time.
Meanwhile, Josh and Sally each have struggles of their own, for Sally, the ghost, it is the Reaper. The Reaper is a figment of Sally’s imagination who is apparently taxed with the job of getting rid of souls who have been on the plane of the living for too long by tearing them. Tearing them sends them to a terrible place called Limbo where they know they still exist, but it doesn’t matter because each soul is forced to endure their own “personal limbo” whether it be watching your family live on without you or living forever at the bottom of the lake where you once perished. After a long quarrel with the Reaper it’s discovered that he is not merely a figment of Sally’s imagination, but is actually a darker side of herself. Sally feels terrible about this and vows to help those who she sent to Limbo. Eventually, she sees no other way, but to go to Limbo and get them out herself. To do this she tears herself in the season 2 finale, which is seen initially as noble,; at the end of the finale episode Sally’s voice is heard through the radio saying that she has made a grave mistake.
Josh’s problems are not lessened by the fact that he and Nora, his girlfriend and the mother of his future child, are the only ones who are not lost or captured somewhere, in fact he and Nora have been attempting to find Aiden and Sally for the year that they have been missing. In season two’s finale Josh had killed Ray, the one who had changed him into a werewolf to begin with, in the attempt to cure both himself and Nora, however, on the next full moon Josh finds that it has worked for him but not for Nora; she was not so lucky. She was not cured by Ray’s demise because her creator is Josh; to cure herself she would have to kill the man she loves, so she chooses to endure.
Though it is based upon BBC’s television series “Being Human,” the American series is full of unique twists and turns and borrows only the original premise of it’s sister show. It is a “howling” good time to watch and truly a drama like no other. Season three may be viewed on Syfy’s Powerful Mondays at 9/8 central.
