A few weeks ago, English 10 students were given the “Butterfly Project.” The main objective of the project was to make a butterfly based off of a poem written during the Holocaust. Many students enjoyed this and made very creative butterflies.
I interviewed a few people whose butterflies caught my eye. When I asked Alivia Shipp what she thought about the poem she said “I felt it was very heartfelt.” I asked her if it made her realize how important the Holocaust was to history, she stated, “I didn’t think it was important but once she explained it more I realized how important it was.” My last question was if designing the butterfly helped her understand the poem better, her response was “Yeah, when I was drawing the butterfly I could pick out specific things from the poem, it helped me understand it better.”
Another student, Peytann Lunbery said “I chose the design I did because when I think about hope, I think about a storm happening around you and when you see a rainbow in the sky it gives you hope that the storm will end soon.” I also asked her where this project ranks in her all time list, she answered with “I would say it is one of the best that I have done.”
Brooklynn Smith said “I liked it because it gave me time to think about how I express poems and what it meant to me.” When I asked her where this project stands all time, she responded with “A 9 out of 10, It gave me artistic and creative liberties.”
Around the school many students have said that this was an amazing project and that it was super important. Other students have said that it was cool to see a project where you use your artistic imagination in a class like English. Hopefully, Mrs. Gustafson continues this project over the years as it is clearly one of the students favorite projects to do!
