Alliance High School offers many clubs students can participate in. A very productive and competitive club is Academic Decathlon, also known as ACA-DECA.
The members of ACA-DECA have meetings with the new c
lub’s sponsor, Mr. Terry Hickman, two or three morning’s a week at seven-thirty. Members are given a topic, a new one each year, and study that particular topic for competitions; the topic for this year’s competitions is Russia.
ACA-DECA competitions include written tests over Art, Language and Literature, and Mathematics relating to the particular topic. Participants also compete in the Super Quiz, which is an oral quiz relay with questions covering Art, Economics, Language and Literature, Mathematics, Music, Science, and the Social Sciences. Competitors compete against other students within their GPA level.
On November the Alliance High ACA-DECA team traveled to Ravenna for a scrimmage. They competed against four other schools, including a two time defending state champion team. The AHS team brought home a second place overall and also a second place in the Super Quiz.
Josh Keckler, Josh Raum, Mackenzie Molyneaux, Edgar Reynaga, Brady Shimp, and Ryan Waggener were all individual medal winners. Not only did Brady Shimp bring home a medal in Honors Art, but he was also the Overall Top Scorer for Alliance.
The ACA-DECA team members will continue to study their topic for the next two months and will travel on January 19 to compete again. The SPUD wishes the team the best of luck and a happy study.
