Acts of Kindness

Acts+of+Kindness

Random acts of kindness are when we make a deliberate attempt to brighten another person’s day.  Acts of kindness could be as simple as holding the door for somebody, help carry their groceries to their car, or scooping somebody’s sidewalk and driveway for them when it snows.  It sounds silly because some people actually do those things for random people, but I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seem someone let the door hit somebody when they are right behind them and the number of times I’ve driven down the street and seen an elderly person outside in negative degree weather trying to scoop their driveway as nobody stops to offer their help. I think we all are guilty of looking the other way from time to time.

Why though? Why do we not take ten minutes out of our day to help somebody out? Is it really that hard? I know, I know. We all get so caught up in the things we are doing we are sometimes being rushed. Is it really an excuse though?

Another thing you can do is transport someone who can’t drive. A lot of us who have cars often take it for granted that we can drive anywhere whenever we want. Some people don’t have a durable car that can’t get them around. When it’s below freezing or when it’s blazing hot out, people shouldn’t have to be out walking in it to go to the store or anywhere. Next time you see somebody you know walking stop and offer them a ride because they might not always want to ask you because they think they will be a bother. By giving them a ride it will surely make their day and it should help put a smile on your face also.

If you want to give somebody a gift, have you ever thought about sending a care package to somebody that could really use it whether it’s a college student, a homeless person, or somebody in the military.  A care package is a great idea and it’s fairly cheap. It can contain little items that people might not have. It could be something small and it will mean a lot to them.  You could also write a thank you note to your police or fire department. Not everybody realizes how much he or she does for us. Everybody is always too busy saying how the cops don’t do anything, or how they harass people. If you look back though maybe they have never helped you personally, but maybe they have helped somebody you know.  When something goes wrong, the cops are always the first one there to try and get the situation under control. Firefighters are always there at the call of duty, and I’m not sure they get thanked as much as they should. Just because they haven’t helped you doesn’t mean they don’t do anything beneficial.

Take inspiration for your own random acts of kindness to help put a smile on someone’s face. We always seem to think that we have so many problems in our lives, which might be the case, but there is always somebody who has it worse than you. Next time you see somebody struggling offer them a hand at whatever task they are doing. People might not always show there appreciativeness but weather or not they do it should make you feel better about yourself knowing you helped somebody.
