A few weeks ago, a call was received at the police station in Sumter, South Carolina. Thirteen-year-old Cameron Simmons made the call to law enforcement, saying that he was fighting with his mother and didn’t want to live with her anymore.

            Gaetano Acerra, a local police offer arrived at the scene, specifically told Cameron, “You have it good. You have a roof over your head.” However, that all changed when the officer took a glance at the teenager’s room. The room was vacant. There wasn’t even a bed for the boy to sleep in at night.

            The officer handed Cameron’s mother his phone number so that Cameron could call the officer whenever he wants. Officer Acerra stated that his heart went out for Cameron. “I thought the little things that he needed I could give him to make him a happier kid,” said Acerra.

            The warm-hearted hero then went out of his way to purchase the thirteen-year-old a bed that he could sleep in, a television, a desk set for homework, and a Wii system to go with the television that was donated by a local citizen who heard about the devastating news.

            It’s a blessing that Cameron is now sleeping in a comfortable bed that he received from the officer. “Now my back won’t hurt when I sleep,” said the thirteen-year-old. Officer Acerra said that he didn’t do this deed for the publicity. “I did it because I could; it was the right thing to do and I think people should do things like this.”

            The officer plans to provide Simmons with more furniture in the future that will help him get through the little things in life, such as a dresser and a mirror. It seems law enforcement especially now days receive a bad reputation. Americans need to realize that not all police officers have “bad” written all over them. Most of them take their jobs seriously and have a philosophy of helping the community out.
