School Girls Injured From Stage Collapsion In California

Last Sunday March 8, in southern California, an all-girls sister school with about 250 students from Rosary High School were singing and dancing on the platform of a stage when the stage collapsed.

Twenty-five students were sent to the hospital, some with broken bones but thankfully most students just had small injuries like bruises and scrapes. They were   luck because it was a quick, sudden collapse, and the students fell right away. Investigators are still trying to figure out how the accident occurred.

One girl was on the stage behind the collapsed area and said, “ it was the last of several performances and everyone was feeling great when things went suddenly wrong.” She said, “we were all jumping, having fun, we had done it five times before, and then all of a sudden the girls in front of me just disappeared,” Sabrina Lee told KABC-TV as she and other performers returned to the campus on Sunday afternoon to gather their belongings, “I don’t know what happened. All I know was I turned around and ran.”

Family and friends of the girls who were in the audience were all in shock when, the girls were jumping around like crazy and suddenly the very front row just completely fell under.

The cause appeared to be too many students on stage and too much weight on the platform. Inspectors will double-check the school’s stage permit to determine if it is up to date, they will also review whether the permit included a weight restriction or a limit on the number of people who could be on the stage.

The part of the stage that collapsed was extended in the 1980’s to provide more square footage.  Even though it was a very scary moment for everyone that was  there when the accident happened, it was good that nobody was seriously injured.
