For many people running is nothing more than a chore or something to be dreaded but in recent years the sport has gained new popularity as running newbies are being attracted with the development of new theme wacky races.
These theme races are different than traditionally organized races because runners don’t just race; depending upon the theme they may walk, run, or even roll across the finish line wearing glow sticks, paint, mud, or maybe even nothing at all.
One of the most well-known new theme runs is the Color Run, which is exactly what it sounds like; it’s a run where participates get color thrown at them throughout the race. The color is 100% natural and is made out of a cornstarch paint powder. This run is not focused on speed, but on the enjoyment runners get from spending time with friends and enjoying the atmosphere. The event is held in cities all around the world from Honolulu, Hawaii, to Las Vegas, Nevada, and there is even an Australia Tour. There are only two requirements to be a contestant of this amazing theme run. The first rule is runners must wear a white shirt, which is mandatory at the starting gate, and the second rule is that they must be plastered in color by the time they cross the finish line.
Another popular theme run is called the Zombie Infested 5K Obstacle Course Race. Before the race, the runners are given a flag belt, just like flag football players. These flags represent the runner’s health and are a target for the zombies who pursue runners to try to take flags. If a runner loses all his health flags, he is infected with the zombie virus and the zombies win. However, health bonuses are hidden throughout the course and in these health packs are extra flags that can carry runners to the finish line. Throughout the course are both man-made and natural obstacles, which are intended to test contestants strength and speed. Where outrunning and dodging zombies runners may need to climb, crawl, duck and dive their way to the finish line.
Another newly developed theme run is the Rugged Manic 5K. This 5K is only for the most rough and tough runners out there. There are no mile markers or mapped out routes, only runners and a course of mud, fire, and 12 foot walls to climb over. Rugged Manic races are held on ski slopes, motocross tracks, forests, and fields all over the U.S.
Other themed runs include: The Bare Buns Fun Run, the Krispy Kreme Challenge, the Campus Scramble, the New York City Pizza Run, the Wife Carrying Championship, and the Ultimate Mud Run. Not only are these races new and fun experiences, but they are also a healthy way to get in shape.
