Journalism is a fun elective to choose when picking out your schedule for the next school year. In this elective you write stories for a website called the Spud. Each month you pick out three separate stories to write about for the school page. For these stories you usually need to find one or more people to interview and take some pictures to post with your story. Usually you’ll need something called tough skin because people are not always going to be the nicest towards you when you’re trying to get an interview or even a picture for your story.
Ryggin Meyer states that “Figuring out what topic I’m going to base my story off of is the most difficult thing for me to do when coming up with a story.” Topics can definitely be hard when writing a story because there is a limited amount of events that goes on every month and there are multiple others who write for the Spud and not only that you need three different story topics for each month.
Mrs. Gustafson Alliance High Schools English teacher, advises Journalism approves the high schooler’s story ideas and approves them before posting the stories onto the Spuds website.
Not only Ryggin has this problem finding topics though, Bria Steggall has also stated, “Finding something to write about can be hard especially if you’re a little behind and turn in your story idea sheet last.” Though when there seems like there is nothing to write about you can always write a story about your personal interests.
Journalism is a great way to express your feelings and thoughts to the public about certain situations. This class is also a great way to improve your mind, writing, and social skills. Journalism is a skill building elective that can help you towards the future. The SPUD encourages you very greatly to try this elective out!

Adriana Alvarado, Staff Writer
Adriana Alvarado is a 15-year-old student at Alliance High School, this is her first year in journalism and she's a sophomore. She was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska on June 23, 2008. Adriana is in her second year of cheerleading; she really likes it. It has inspired her to go to school and be more talkative and friendlier. Her inspiration to cheer was watching Bring It On when she was 7 years old ever since she wanted to be a cheerleader and her dreams came true! Adriana loves the cheer environment because it's fun and she gets to interact with the girls plus make some new friends.
Other than cheer, some of her hobbies are drawing, going on night walks, doing her makeup, and organizing things in her house. She loves all these things, they are very relaxing and calming for her. Adriana lives with her dad, 3 sisters, and pet gerbil named Klaus. Her gerbil is very special to her because he's been her emotional support. When she was 7 years old, she moved back with her mom and dad. Before that, she lived with her grandma, Carol. When she moved back with her mom they moved to Osage, Missouri, for 2 years and came back in 4th grade. She was glad she left Missouri because everyone was mean there and she liked the Alliance's environment more. She is very excited to be writing with SPUD and will be very committed to her writing for the class. Once Adriana graduates high school, she wants to be a lawyer. She wants to be one because she likes watching crime shows and she thinks it would be very fun. If that fails, she would like to try and get her CNA to work at the hospital with the babies because she likes kids. Adriana is hoping that The SPUD helps her with communication skills. She's excited to write for The SPUD!
