If I Stay or If I Go

If I Stay or If I Go

If I Stay or if I go, if you had to choose what would you do? If I Stay is a book that is about a love story and a tragic car accident. Mia has a loving family and boyfriend. She plays the Cello and Adam, her boyfriend, plays the guitar. Music brought them together. Both her parents loved music and her dad was in a band, until they had Teddy and her mom told him she wasn’t raising two kids by herself. In the book it tells you more about her dad’s band and how he was before they had Teddy.

Adam and Mia have been together for about a year and a half. Even though they fight a lot about the little things, they love each other. They are in love not like high school relationship love. It was real. Ever since they’ve been together she goes to Adam’s concerts, but she feels like she doesn’t fit in so she usually stays backstage. Mia applies to Julliard but doesn’t tell Adam until later. She gets an audition and goes and plays to see if she gets to go to school there. Mia has never played so well in her life. She tells Adam and he tries to be excited for her and says they should celebrate. They are both busy for the next few weekends so they decide to go out sometime during the week to the same place they usually go. In the movie Adam gets mad because Mia didn’t tell him she was applying to Julliard and they had already talked about getting a place together. They never really talked about their future together, but if Mia got accepted to Julliard she would go to New York City and Adam would be here with the band.

Mia has what you would call an out of body experience. She is watching the medics because she is laying on the ground, bleeding and unconscious. Mia tries to talk to them but no one answers. She then sees her body being put into an ambulance that she gets in to. When they get to the hospital Mia goes looking for her parents. She remembers Teddy, her little brother, and wants to make sure he is okay. Later on Mia finds out her parents died in the accident before the ambulance got to them. Teddy is alive and Willow, a family friend, is with him.

Only family is allowed in the ICU to see Mia and all she wants is for Adam, her boyfriend, to come through those doors. Later that day Kim, her best friends, and Adam show up together. Mia wants to run away even though all she has thought about is Adam coming to see her. Adam tries to get into the ICU but the nurse tells him he isn’t allowed in there and he yells at her to let him in. He just needs to see her. The nurse calls security and Kim tells him they will find another way. Kim helps Adam back to the waiting room. They try to think of a distraction to get the nurses away for half a second just so Adam can see Mia. Willow comes up to stay with the rest of the family, which means if Willow is here, who is with Teddy? Willow is in tears and walks over to her grandparents. Mia puts two and two together and that’s when she knows Teddy has died. Neither the book or the movie talked about Teddy that much and I think that they should have. Mia thinks she has no family left, so she has no reason to stay. Her Grandpa comes in to talk to her and he tells her that it’s okay to leave. He understands. Kim comes to talk to her and Kim talks to her normally. She tells Mia everyone who came to see her today and she says some of those are your family and friends, but we’re all your family. Adam comes back and tells her to stay. He’ll do anything she wants him to do. He grabs her hand but this time she feels him. She’s using all of the energy she has left and squeezes his hand.

In the book it went back and forth between Mia being in the hospital to the memories of her family, friends, Adam and all the other things in her life. In the movie it told the love story between her, Adam, and family, and all the things that happen, like what she does in her free time, coffee with Kim, cello lessons, when she wanted to play the cello when she was a kid and the first cello she ever owned. Then the movie went into telling the story about the car accident and everything that happened at the hospital. The movie left out so many things that were in the book, but every movie does that. I think the book was better than the movie, but the movie was good too.
