Trouble With Katy Perry’s Music Video

Famous entertainer Katy Perry revolted the Muslim religion by having an Islamic symbol on her online version of her music video, “Dark Horse”, online viewers saw the video and claimed it was offensive to their religion so they removed the symbol from the original music video. “In the middle of the music video it shows a man being burnt, while wearing a pendant forming the word ‘Allah’which in Arabic means ‘God’ “wrote Shazad Igbal, in a petition calling for the video to be removed from YouTube. Over 60,000 people signed Ignal’s petition so finally the offensive symbol was removed from the video .

Some people said that the image of the pendant goes so fast it’s almost impossible to even notice. “YouTube isn’t perfect, but this is ridiculous” said Dan Gainor, VP of business and Culture at the Media Research Center. “Just as Muslims were outraged by portrayals in ‘South Park’, they are outraged by this, meanwhile Christians are criticized, abused, parodied, persecuted and worse on a daily basis in the news and entertainment media”. He also added, artists  like Lady Gaga and Madonna repeatedly use Christian symbols in music videos in ways that offend some Christians.

Katy Perry shared a statement saying she was  trying to give a very beautiful performance about a place she had so much love for. This isn’t the first time Katy Perry has these kind of issues, in her music video “I Kissed A Girl” she was also criticized by some people saying that it was too loud and overexcited. Another event where  Perry got a lot of pushback was at her Geisha-themed performance of “Unconditionally” at the American Music Awards last November. As the daughter of two Christian pastors, Perry has said several times in her interviews that she does not identify with a particular religion, “but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God”, she told Claire magazine last year.
