Mail Bomb Delivered Kills Retired Lawyer
John Setzer was 74 years old when he mysteriously received a package that was delivered to his home and the package exploded, killing him instantly and seriously injuring his 72-year-old wife, Marion Setzer. Marion had to be airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center immediately. The tragedy took place near the neighborhood near Lebanon, Tennessee, about 30 miles east of Nashville.
John was a retired lawyer, but before he retired his law partner, George Cate Jr., said that John was a dedicated servant and also a pastor. They both met while serving in the Army Reserve. George is still confused on why anyone would want to hurt John or his wife. “John and Marion are a great couple, and they have dedicated themselves to taking care of other people,” George told CNN affiliate WZTV. He speaks of a time when John and Marion’s son, who is also named John, got killed at the age of 3 by a wild dog attack. Ever since that incident, the couple would always go and visit with the parents of child deaths that they hear about over the news, and share with them what they had gone through.
There were clues around the package such as pieces of paper and labels that may have been a note located on the bomb, and could’ve been a message from the attacker. The attacker could’ve been seeking revenge over the retired lawyer for maybe being an unsatisfied client who got a bad deal. “Clients that didn’t like the way they were represented, or represented some other client; now this is payback,” said Vince, director of criminal justice programs at Mount St. Mary’s University in Maryland.
Ever since the bombing took place, neighbors and other people who have heard about this tragedy have been too scared to even go to their mailbox. Postal inspectors have studied and average of 16 mail bombs over the past few years, and the Postal Service has processed more than 170 billion pieces of mail each of the past few years. Many people receive mail packages and don’t question it, so it makes the community a little nervous to go check their mailboxes. There is an $8,000 bounty set on any evidence leading to the arrest and of anyone responsible for the attack on the Setzers.
