2 Sons Killed In The Same Month
Dinyal New’s two sons were both killed just three weeks apart from each other. She had just held a funeral for her youngest son, Lee Weathersby, who was only 13-years-old when he was a victim in a drive-by shooting. Her eldest son, Lamar Broussard and his best friend, Derryck Harris, who were both 19, also got shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. These tragic events happened in East Oakland, California, where drive-by’s and lots of teen murders happen.
January 1, 2014, New’s youngest son, Lee, was walking home with a friend, and got shot on New Year’s Even at 104th Avenue and Walnut Street. He had 28 bullets shot at him that day, he was only a few minutes away from home. As the flowers that had been at Lee’s funeral were beginning to turn brown, New’s oldest son, Lamar, got shot and killed just two blocks from home around 2:15 p.m. His friend, Derryck, also got shot and killed during the drive-by. It was on the intersection of 100th and Longfellow Avenues on Sunday, February 2nd, 2014.
Dinyal buried her 13-year-old son just days before Lamar got shot and killed. She was devastated and her life had completely changed. Instead of starting out the New Year with happiness and change, it started with devastation and pain.
“We had Lee’s funeral this Thursday. Lamar was there and he was crying and he was hurt and now, I have no more kids. No more kids,” New said.
“They shot him in the head. He didn’t deserve that,” Derryck’s mother Tameka Rothschild told KTVU Monday night. Derryck Harris’s mother, Tameka Rothschild, said that her son always smiled and had a great sense of humor, and he also loved cars and children. Derryck and Lamar were in a car when about a dozen shots got fired at them, killing them instantly. Police have not made any arrests in either incident, and police and family aren’t sure if the two crimes are related as well. The victims’ families say they want someone to step forward, help find the shooters, and get justice for their sons.
“I don’t want street justice, I want justice through the court. I want to see them get sentenced,” New said.
