The Spud has chosen Tyson Dowler to feature as its Profiled Athlete. Tyson, the son of Kelly and Dana Dowler, is the 152 lb. 2013 Class B State Champion Wrestler. Tyson came off an undefeated season before winning State at his weight class. Dowler has wrestled all through high school and from early in the year he was projected to win State and he fulfilled his dreams.
Dowler’s name will now be added to the list of wrestling champs whose names grace the wall of the AHS wrestling room. He said, “ Its cool to know my name will be up there forever.” Dowler prepared to win a state title in the offseason by going to Scottsbluff to practice and going to many camps. Tyson said that when he first saw that he was predicted to win State he thought, “ It was cool, but I knew it was nothing but an opinion.” Dowler went 29-0 coming into the State Duals Championship. He said the most challenging part about wrestling is trying not to get slammed, and losing weight to make it to where you need to be.
Wrestling taught Tyson a lot but most importantly it taught him to have discipline, even if things get tough. Dowler said that his coach, Travis Peak was a big advantage to him at State because he is a “great coach”. To the younger wrestlers Tyson said, “ Work hard, never settle for winning, settle for dominating.”
On the team Tyson said he most admired senior Dawson Johnson because they wrestled together in practice and Dawson led him to the State Championship. Dowler said he also looks up to Matt Mcdonough, a wrestler at Iowa University at 125 pounds. McDonough, Dowler said, is one of the best wrestlers in the country.
Coach Peak also said Dowler was a good wrestler. Peak said,” I’m glad he lived up to his potential and claimed his title. I expected him to win it this year as long as he took care of business on and off the mat.” Peak said Tyson was so successful this year because he expected it from himself.
