In Kano, Nigeria there were explosives strapped to a girl detonated in a crowded marketplace. According to the police, this killed at least 20 people and injured 18 others. The local hospital however counted 51 people with injuries. “Many of wounded victims taken to Maiduguri Specialist hospital have life-threatening injuries,“ said Musa Kyarimi, a nurse from the hospital.

The blast took place at the main entrance of the crowded Market. This market is the largest in the city of Maiduguri. The girl was stopped by vigilantes who man the gates of the market and set as security. She was being screened with metal detector at the entrance. Its standard procedure for people to be screened before entering the market. “The metal detector beeped indicating she was carrying a metal under her dress, but it exploded before she could be singled out from the crowd,” said Abur Babakura. Her age was not immediately clear. Some thought she was 17 or 18, others thought she looked 10.

No one has claimed responsibility, Boko Haram militants are the main suspects. This is the fourth attack on the city’s market since July. The marketplace has been a frequent target, as more than 45 people were killed in November and more than 10 others died in a blast on December 1. One man said,“We believe that an accomplice watching from a distance pressed the remote.” Boko Haram has terrorized northern Nigeria since 2009. They have attacked police, churches, civilians and bombed government buildings. They have also kidnapped 200 schoolgirls who were abducted in April and are still missing.
