Alliance Students Published

This fall, Roxie Smith, the Alliance High School Creative Writing teacher had students submit a poem in the Creative Communication writing contest. Students selected one of their many poems that they had written throughout the year to be entered into the contest. The students that were selected had the opportunity to be published in a book for students in the Midwest including the states: Nebraska, Iowa Kansas, Michigan, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin.

Alliance had eight students who had poems selected: Shay Behm, Madison Hawk, Morgan Johnston, Samantha Lopez, Ashley Miller, Victoria Redecker, Esteban Sanchez, and Stephanie Wickham. Each of the students were thrilled about their achievement.

“When my mom told me that we got the letter in the mail, I was really excited and proud,” said sophomore Shay Behm, “I was especially happy when my mom told me how proud she was.” When Mrs. Smith was asked about the outcome she said, “It is exciting, I’ve never had that many in one semester let alone the year.” The students have an opportunity to be published for free, without being scammed.

Creative Communication has been doing the free entry contest for over twenty years. Once selected the student has to give permission to the company to publish their poem in the book and then has the opportunity to purchase a copy of the book. Each entry is individually read and evaluated with the top forty-five percent of the students who enter being invited to be published. This opportunity is something that will stay with the students forever and it is a great memory for them. Mrs. Smith will continue having students enter hoping that the outcome will be just as good as this year.
