Alliance High’s Alternative Energy and Science Research classes recently teamed up for a reasonably ambitious project. They set about to harness solar power and create an alternatively-fueled oven. They then used the ovens to bake cupcakes. Two different methods were utilized to cook the cupcakes: parabolic reflection cookers which use reflected energy to focus the heat into a single location and convection oven style which utilized black absorption materials to soak up the energy inside of a sealed area. Temperatures in all ovens exceeded 200 degrees. This project was a good way to show how relatively simple it is to use alternative fuels. It is not difficult to make an impact–whatever size–for the betterment of the world around us. See the slideshow below for pictures of the students and ovens.
