Spring football is wrapping up at the University of Nebraska, where the Corn Huskers are looking to “set a foundation for the fall” as head coach Bo Pelini said. The Huskers finish spring training with the spring game Saturday, April 12.

There have been many impressive things come out of spring training this year. Senior Jamal Turner, a slot receiver who was out most of last season with injury, took snaps at quarterback, giving glimpses into next seasons offense, which looks could include, Turner as a wildcat option.

Returning Redshirt Sophomore Tommy Armstrong is expected to lead the offense at quarterback. Armstrong played in nine games last year after senior Taylor Martinez went down with injury. Armstrong shared minutes with senior Ron Kellogg III, but with both of the seniors gone, Armstrong looks like the frontrunner to lead the team. Other key returning players for next fall include, wide receiver Kenny Bell, running back Ameer Abdullah, and a seasoned offensive line. The Husker offense should be very productive next year, and if the defense continues it’s improvement, the Huskers might have something special going on.

Last season, when Nebraska’s Black-shirts nearly blew a huge lead against Wyoming, and gave up over 300 yards of offense to South Dakota State, the critics were very hard on the Nebraska defense, questioning there ability to be elite. Sophomore Randy Gregory burst on to the scene in the later part of the season, becoming one of the Big Ten’s most feared pass rushers. Gregory led the Big Ten in sacks, and was fifteenth nationally. With two more seasons left, Gregory looks to lead the defense and get the Big Red back to where they used to be. There will be many questions regarding the secondary, as new coach Charlton Warren will bring a different look to the program. Returning corner back Josh Mitchell will likely be the leader on defense and along with a relatively young secondary, the Huskers have a lot of room to grow and could be dangerous next fall.

The Husker Spring Game as always was a huge success, with over 61,000 fans in attendance to watch a scrimmage. Bo Pelini stole the show leading the tunnel walk while holding his cat, a play on the fake twitter account for him (@fauxPelini).  The Husker faithful was out in full force and the young team looked very promising for the coming fall.
