The 58th annual Grammy Awards took place on February 15th, 2016. They were held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Unlike the past tradition of being held on a Sunday in early February, due to the fact that Valentine’s Day took place on that Sunday, they were instead held on a Monday.  Eighty-three awards were given to the best artists, songs, albums, music videos, compositions, performances, and recordings.

Although Rihanna cancelled her Grammys performance, there were plenty of other artists scheduled to play. Between three of the performing artists there were twenty-five Grammy nominations.  Kendrick Lamar led the trio with eleven nominations, followed by Taylor Swift and The Weeknd, both of which had seven nominations.  lady-gaga-intel-david-bowieAmong those who took the stage there were a few tribute performances, including Gaga’s tribute to David Bowie and the Eagles paired up with Jackson Browne to honor Glenn Frey.

Taylor Swift won her second Grammy for Album of the Year, making her the first woman to do so, which she stated in her acceptance speech. She also said some inspiring words aimed towards young women who have their success underappreciated.  Her words on the topic were also somewhat aimed at Kanye West’s earlier offensive claim that he made her famous.

“If you just focus on the work, and you don’t let those people sidetrack you, someday when you get where you’re going, you’ll look around and you’ll know that it was you and the people who love you that put you there and that will be the greatest feeling in the world,” Taylor Swift said in her speech.

The “Record of the Year” award went to the song Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson (ft. Bruno Mars) and the “Best New Artist” award was landed by Meghan Trainor. Ed Sheeran won his first ever Grammy for “Song of the Year” with his popular track, ThinkingEd-Sheeran-Grammys-Acceptance-Speech-2016
