Biggest Lottery Prize in History

As many know, the $1.5 billion Powerball is the biggest lottery prize in history making the odds of winning 1 in 292 million. The jackpot was split three ways, winning tickets were sold in Chino Hills, California, Munford, Tennessee, and in Beach, Florida. The winning numbers were 08, 27, 37, 04 and 19. The winning Powerball number was 10.

The three winners have claimed the $1.5 billion Powerball jackpot, but splitting the winnings into three is harder than you would think. All three winners are from different states with different tax laws. Florida and Tennessee are both states with no state income tax and California law exempts lottery winners from paying the 12.3% state tax. They will each need to pay 39.6% in federal income taxes, but after doing all the calculations, they will each take home $187.2 million.

Many wonder what do you even do with that much money? According to CNN, “The safest investment might be to put it into a 30 year government bond. With a 2.85% yield, each winner would get about $5.3 million a year to live on for the next 30 years.”

Before Wednesday, Powerball has had 19 consecutive drawings with no winners. Then the sales soared and so did the Jackpot’s value. Two weeks ago the jackpot was shy of $400 million.

“Very exciting” said the owner of the 7-Eleven franchise in Chino Hills who sold on of the winning tickets. Winning the grand prize of $1.5 billion is extremely exciting and everyone is talking about it. Congratulations to the winners! The world can not wait to see what you do with all your money.
