‘Like Crazy’ is director Drake Doremus’ latest film. It is a widely unknown film—it was shot with a $250,000 budget—but it is absolutely wonderful. It’s the tragic tale of two college students who fall in love, but when the girl violates her student Visa—she’s from England—the two are placed half a world apart.
Doremus puts forth a lot of effort to draw the audience into the film. He uses intimate camera angles and a nonlinear arrangement of scenes to make viewers experience the youthful ups and downs of first love. Doremus’ script for the film was actually more of an outline. The actors know which rough direction the film is going to move, but much of the dialogue is improvised, which means the emotion is raw and unpracticed. The actors were forced to immerse themselves into their characters far more than in a standard movie. All of this combines to create a unique story. ‘Like Crazy’ will leave you emotionally taxed and heartbroken long after the final scene is over.
