Generally, American food is really unhealthy. For this reason, obesity is quite common. The number of kids with obesity is increasing, and that is because people are used to eating this type of food. However, do you think the obesity numbers could go down if the food that people eat was healthy and well-balanced? Do you think more people could avoid heart disease and other illnesses?
The Mediterranean diet is associated with reduced risk factors for cardiovascular diseases. This diet is based on vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts and seeds, and olive oil. For the majority it is plant-based, including the objective to reduce the intake of trans and saturated fats, and substitute those for healthy fats. One of the primary and indispensable foodstuff is olive oil. Olive oil provides monounsaturated fat and has low cholesterol levels, which is why it is used for frying and cooking, instead of butter, which has high levels of cholesterol. Nuts and seeds also provide monounsaturated fat.
All of this is a lifestyle, not just eating healthier food. It is also exercising and working out. Schools play a really important part in this too, since kids are taught what type of food they have to eat to stay healthy instead of eating junk food for breakfast or snacks. Also, some schools have food recommendations about what they should eat and what they should not. Some examples can be eating more fruits instead of processed food.
People grow up with these habits, so it is easier to get used to it if they start really early. However it depends on the family habits and what they do to stay healthy. Not all people have a healthy life, although having one has a lot of advantages.
