“Divergent” means tending to be different or develop in different directions. “Insurgent” means rising in active revolt. “Allegiant” means the obligation of loyalty. These three words are the three titles for the Divergent series written by Veronica Roth.

Divergent is the first book in the series. The main characters of the series are Beatrice Prior, also known as Tris, and Tobias Eaton, known as Four. The setting is placed in a futuristic Chicago where the inhabitants were placed inside of a fence, separating them from the rest of the world. Inside the fence, there are five factions. Abnegation are the selflessness, Dauntless are the brave, Amity are the peaceful, Candor are the honest, and Erudite are the smart. You are either allowed to stay in your faction, or join another. The aptitude test is supposed to tell you the one faction that you belong to, not three factions like Beatrice got on her test.

Insurgent starts off with the results of the small war Jeanine Matthews waged on the Abnegation. Throughout the book, Tobias and Beatrice escape to outside the fence to seek help from the Amity. They want to destroy the Erudite and all the information that they have on the other factions, and they seek help in the factionless, led by Tobias mother.

Allegiant is the last book in the series. To start the book, Beatrice is in jail and is tried for her actions against the new government, along with all of the other people who were sided against the Dauntless and factionless. Beatrice and a group of people head outside of the fence only to learn that people have been watching them. They say that they have been trying to create Divergents. They say that the people who are Divergent are normal and everybody else is genetically flawed. They did not expect Jeanine to start killing and hunting Divergents. As these group of people are in the Bureau Of Genetic Welfare, they all seem out of place and worried.

Roth greatly displayed the importance of peace. Her writings suck you in. They are beautifully worded and they are hard to put down. Summit Entertainment brought the first book Divergent to life in April of 2014. Beatrice Prior was portrayed by Shailene Woodley, Tobias Eaton was portrayed by Theo James, Jeanine Matthews was portrayed by Kate Winslet, and Caleb Prior was portrayed by Ansul Elgort.

At the 2011’s Goodread’s  Choice Awards, Divergent won the favorite book of 2011. It won the Sakura Medal Award, and was number one in the Teens’ Top Ten Vote. The Divergent series is one recommended for many teenagers and young adults. It is a good read that I recommend for all.
